Gut health is one of those topics everyone talks about these days, but few truly understand it. Including your General Practitioner or M.D.
Now, before you come at me for doctor shaming, I have very good reason for my perspective. And I’m not just talking about the countless stories I’ve heard from women who turn to me as a last resort because the antacids and stool softeners weren’t working.
I’ve personally had serious gut issues ignored by doctors. Issues that started off as yellow flags and eventually turned into huge red flags, impacting my health in ways I never could have imagined.
So, you might think you’re doing everything right: eating well, taking probiotics, and shaking off occasional discomfort. But what if the basics you believe about your gut are actually myths?
The truth about gut health is often hidden, even from your doctor. Let’s debunk the most common gut health myths that could be sabotaging your wellness journey.

Truth: Everyone’s bathroom schedule is different, but your colon is a key detox pathway. Chances are, if you’re not pooping regularly, other detox pathways in your system are also probably stagnant is some way.
Your body needs to eliminate toxins.
Not having regular bowel movements means you’re storing waste. The color, shape, size, and smell of your stools are indicators of what’s happening inside your gut – and that information can change day by day.
Chronic constipation can lead to toxin buildup, bloating, and discomfort. Trust your body’s signals. Regular elimination is key to a healthy gut and overall wellness.
Truth: Feeling full after a meal is normal, but chronic bloating that lingers all day or appears without eating is a red flag. Persistent bloating can signal food intolerances, imbalanced gut bacteria, or digestive issues that need attention. Don’t brush it off as ‘just how you are.’
Truth: If certain foods cause pain, gas, or bloating, your body is telling you something’s off.
Temporarily cutting out problem foods while you work on improving your digestion isn’t deprivation, it’s smart self-care. Identifying triggers can help you get to the root, heal your gut, and feel better faster.
Truth: Probiotics are not one-size-fits-all. There are thousands of different strains of probiotics, and what works wonders for your friend might do nothing for you or even make things worse.
Suffering with chronic rhinitis due to allergies? There’s a strain for that (l-rhamnosus). Want to improve digestion and strengthen your gut barrier? There’s a strain for that (b-longum).
Choosing the right probiotic requires understanding your unique gut flora and symptoms to support a healthy balance and prevent bloating issues.
Truth: Some say gut tests only show what’s leaving your body, not what’s living inside. But these tests can reveal bacterial overgrowths, the presence of parasites, and imbalances that traditional tests might miss. While they’re not perfect, microbiome testing offers valuable clues that can help tailor your gut health plan.
Gut health isn’t just about trendy diets or random supplements.
It’s about listening to your body, understanding the science, and cutting through the noise of myths.
