Turmeric has been making waves in the wellness community, and for good reason! This vibrant yellow spice, often found in curries, is not only a culinary delight but also a powerhouse of health benefits.
That’s why I wanted to breakdown some basics: what turmeric is, its active ingredients, and some fun ways to incorporate it into your daily routine!
Turmeric, scientifically known as *Curcuma longa*, is a flowering plant belonging to the ginger family. Its rhizome, or root, is ground into a bright yellow powder that adds both color and flavor to dishes.
Traditionally used in Indian and Asian cuisine, turmeric has been celebrated for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for its healing properties.
The magic of turmeric lies in its active compound, curcumin.
Curcumin is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can help combat various health issues. Studies suggest that curcumin may aid in reducing inflammation, improving brain function, and even lowering the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
I fell in love with turmeric early into my journey to heal Graves’ Disease because of its anti-inflammation power.
Pair that with its ability to support digestive health and you’ve got a true wellness superstar!
One of my favorite ways to add turmeric into any wellness routine is golden milk.
If you’ve been browsing any of the health-inspired corners of the web, I’m sure you’ve come across golden milk. It’s creamy, spicy (tastes similar to chai) and it’s packed with the anti-inflammatory spice turmeric.

There are a few different ways to tweak the flavor and there are certainly more labor-intensive versions but here’s my favorite 5-minute recipe:
