A stress-free morning routine isn’t just about waking up early so you start work on time. It’s about establishing firm habits that align with your body’s natural rhythms.
Creating a morning routine that sets the tone for your day can dramatically reduce stress and increase productivity.
So, here’s some insight & tips to creating a morning routine that you look forward to — with stress less and more heck yes, energy.
Establishing a daily routine is important for regulating your body’s internal clock. This circadian rhythm dictates when you feel awake and when you feel sleepy, impacting your overall health and well-being.
A consistent morning routine signals to your body that it’s time to wake up, start the day, and get stuff done; helping you feel more energized and focused.
When you wake up at the same time each day and follow a predictable routine, you reinforce your circadian rhythm.
This consistency not only improves your sleep quality but also enhances your mood and mental focus, allowing you to tackle your to-do list with more ease.
Your circadian rhythm plays a crucial role in regulating stress hormones, particularly cortisol. Cortisol is often referred to as the ‘stress hormone’ because it’s released in response to stress.

When your circadian rhythm is off, cortisol levels can become out of whack, leading to more feelings of anxiety and stress.
By sticking to a stress-free morning routine, you can help keep your cortisol levels in check.
A well-structured morning routine promotes a sense of calm and stability, making it easier to handle the challenges of the day ahead. When you start your day on the right foot, you’re less likely to feel overwhelmed or anxious.
A morning without overwhelm begins the night before. Preparing in advance can significantly reduce stress and set you up for a smoother start.

Here’s some morning routine building blocks to try:
– Map Out Your Day: Spend 5-10 minutes each evening going over your schedule for the next day. Write down your top priorities and any appointments, so you wake up with a clear mind.
That way you’re not forgetting your favorite sports bra for yoga or scrambling at the last minute to make that eye appointment (you may or may not have almost forgotten about).
– Set Out Your Clothes: Choose your outfit the night before to eliminate decision fatigue in the morning. It’s a small step that can save you precious time and mental energy in the morning.
Maybe you have an important meeting and need your boss girl blazer or want to try that new pilates studio right by the office after work. Thinking it through and finalizing looks the night before gives you one less thing to work through in the morning.
– Wind Down: Establish a calming bedtime routine that signals to your body it’s time to relax and hit that ‘do not disturb’ mode. Try reading a book, practicing a few gentle stretches, or meditating.
And before you think about unwinding while watching your favorite tv show or reading from your iPad/Kindle, you should read this recent blog to understand how late-night scrolling is harming your gut health.
There’s been a few different versions of my morning routine. There was a time when I would barely open my eyes at 3am, brush my teeth, wash my face, slap on some clothes and head to the gym before most of the world got up.
But over time, that took its toll and eventually led to burnout.
Now, I’m all about the slowest, stress-free morning routine that keeps me grounded and supports my wellness.

Deep Breathing
Before I really get up, I slide (yes, literally slide, lol) out of bed and take a moment on the floor to take 5-10 deep breaths. This helps me fight the urge to jump into action and gives my brain and body a moment to recover from the initial morning cortisol awakening response.
Oil Pulling & Teeth Brushing
I use 1 tablespoon of coconut oil for a 10-minute oil pulling session to support oral health before brushing my teeth. This is when I’m opening up the curtains, letting the sun shine in, and waking up our home.
Hydration & Gut Support Tonic
I enjoy a gut-supporting tonic or herbal tea to kickstart my digestion. A combination of filtered water, ginger, lemon, celtic salt, and aloe vera juice is one of my go-to’s.
Also, morning ice water face dunking might currently be on trend. But for me, washing then rinsing my face with cool water is enough to wake my face up.
Gentle Mindful Movement & Sun Exposure
Whether it’s a couple of gentle yoga poses or taking 20 minutes for a walking meditation, soaking up the sun while moving my body helps to get the blood flowing. It’s also like telling my brain and body: ‘okay girl, it’s a new day, let’s do this!’
Breakfast

Finally, I make sure I have time to sit down and have a balanced breakfast without feeling rushed. Rushing through meals or eating while distracted can cause bloating and other digestive issues. And who has time for that?
Creating a stress-free morning routine is a powerful way to set the stage for a productive day.
By aligning your habits with your body’s natural rhythms, you can reduce stress and support your overall well-being.
